Gibson Thomas, affectionately known as Gideon Thomas Jr. within his family, is a dedicated IT professional, BodyBuilder, family man, and resilient leader from Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. Born on 14 January 2000 in Toropus village, Yandamani tribe, Lower Lie Constituency, Wapenamanda District, he is the eldest son of Thomas (from the Kana tribe of Lower Lie, Wapenamanda) and his wife from Lakui village near Wabag. His father, an Adventist missionary, has dedicated much of his life to ministry, which shaped the family’s early movements.
In 2002, when Gibson was a toddler, the family relocated to Aipinimanda Village in Wabag Rural, Enga Province, following his father’s mission posting. He spent the majority of his childhood and formative years in Wabag, where he completed elementary education at Aipinimanda (Wanomanda) Elementary School. In 2009, he was selected for Grade 3 at Sari Primary School. In 2014, prior to his father’s retirement, the family returned to Wapenamanda. Gibson completed Grade 8 at Wapenamanda Primary School and continued his secondary education at Wapenamanda Foursquare Secondary School. In mid-2017, he transferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Secondary School.
A naturally bright student with strong aptitude in science and technology, Gibson pursued studies in pure physics and information technology. He was among the first cohort to navigate the National Online Application System (NOAS). Due to limited support at the time, he accepted selection into the Diploma in ICT program at the International Training Institute (ITI) POM campus. He completed the two-year diploma successfully and earned a prestigious Manaaki Scholarship to pursue higher studies abroad.
In Auckland, New Zealand, Gibson attended Auckland University of Technology (AUT), where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Network Engineering. He graduated with honours and produced a thesis focused on (network technologies (Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Integration). The Manaaki Scholarship fully funded his studies, marking a significant milestone in his life.
Upon returning to Papua New Guinea, Gibson joined Holiday Inn – IHG Hotels in Port Moresby as an IT Administrator. He was responsible for the IT infrastructure across multiple properties, including Crown Plaza in downtown Port Moresby and the Waigani Holiday Inn, managing complex systems that supported several high-rise towers and all hotel departments. After one year of dedicated service, he received a special recognition award from IHG leadership in acknowledgement of his outstanding performance.
In 2023, Gibson resigned from IHG to explore entrepreneurial opportunities. He worked as a guide with Sogeri Hikers and engaged in other business ventures. He later returned to Wapenamanda and took on technical and managerial roles, including overseeing mine surveillance systems for NPL and serving as Manager and Administrative Lead for PNG Agro SME Incorporation Ltd, a reputable consulting firm.
As the eldest of three brothers (alongside Max and Smith), Gibson has consistently embraced the responsibilities of a father figure and family protector, especially during challenging periods. In June 2025, he married his wife, a proud daughter of Mt. Ialibu in Southern Highlands Province. Their new chapter was soon disrupted by politically motivated tribal conflicts in Wapenamanda, which resulted in the destruction of their family home and loss of property. The couple relocated with their family to Teremanda in Wabag—the area where Gibson spent much of his childhood.
Today, Gibson continues to rebuild and establish a stable home in Teremanda while remaining committed to his family, professional growth, and community. Despite significant setbacks, including business disruptions and displacement, his story reflects perseverance, faith, and an unwavering determination to create a better future for his family and contribute meaningfully to his province and country.
